Buckerfield's garden centres offer a wonderful collection of certified disease free plants that are high yielding, hardy, productive and easy to grow.

Here are some suggestions for the best small fruits around.

Raspberries

There are 2 types of Raspberries; summer-bearing plants produce one big crop in summer and ever-bearing which produce fruit in the summer as well as fall.

The first year after planting, all the flowers should be removed to allow the plant to build up reserves. From the second year on, the plants will flower in the spring and the Raspberries will ripen in the summer or fall.

Raspberry plants need adequate water and fertilizer in the spring and summer, to produce the biggest juiciest berries.

Everbearing raspberries varieties:

Heritage Raspberry

  • This raspberry plant doesn’t need staking. For a summer crop, cut back canes partly after fall fruiting.
  • Produces a heavy crop of large dark red sweet berries.
  • Excellent disease resistance plants.
  • Harvest August to October.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

Autumn Bliss Raspberry

  • Produces heavy yields of red large mild flavored berries.
  • For a summer crop, cut back canes partly after fall fruiting.
  • Good disease resistance.
  • Harvest August to October.
  • Zone hardiness 4-9.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

Fall Gold Raspberry

  • Produces good yields of large, firm yellow berries with excellent flavor.
  • Good disease resistance.
  • Harvest August to October.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

Nova Raspberry

  • Produces good yields of medium red berries with excellent flavor.
  • Excellent winter hardy and heat tolerant. Canes are vigorous, growing upright with light spines.
  • Harvest August to October.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

Prelude Raspberry

  • Produces good yields of medium red berries with excellent flavor.
  • Extreme winter hardy. Earliest to ripen. For a summer crop, cut back canes partly after fall fruiting.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Harvest August to October.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

  • Produces very large, firm, light colored sweet berries with excellent flavour.

  • Produces medium red sweet aromatic berries.

Comet Raspberry

  • Produces medium firm dark red sweet berries.

Latham Raspberry

  • Produces great tasting large red sweet berries.
  • Excellent hardiness and productivity.

Black Raspberry

  • Produces heavy crops of large black berries with excellent flavor.
  • Very winter hardy.

Purple Raspberry

  • Produces a heavy crop of firm very large purple berries with excellent taste.

Currants

Currents are prized for their distinctive flavor and are full of vitamins. Extremely hardy varieties of currants are available, producing intensely flavoured berries. Ideal for making juice, jams, jelly and pies.

Black Currents

  • A hardy and vigorous shrub that produces a high yield of big black fruit with tangy flavor.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plant grows 6 feet tall and can spread 4 feet wide.

Pink Champagne Currents

  • Produces a high yield of medium sized pink berries.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plant grows 6 feet tall and can spread 4 feet wide.

Red Currants

  • Produces a heavy yield of large red berries.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plant grows 6 feet tall and can spread 4 feet wide.

White Currant

  • A hardy and vigorous shrub producing a high yield of large white berries.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plant grows 6 feet tall and can spread 4 feet wide.

Blackberries

Blackberries are excellent eaten fresh or frozen, or try some blackberry wine. Ideal for making juice, jams, jelly and pies. Plants are very disease-resistant and are ideally suited for growing against a fence or trellis.

Navaho Blackberry

  • Produce a heavy yield of black very large sweet berries.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Plants are thornless and grow 8 feet tall and can spread 6 feet wide.

Black Satin

  • Produces very large, firm black berries. Excellent flavor.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Plants are thornless and grow8 feet tall and can spread 6 feet wide.

Triple Crown Blackberry

  • Produces crops of the largest black berries that are medium firm.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • July – August harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Plants are thornless and grow 8 feet tall and can spread 6 feet wide.

Gooseberry

Their distinctive sweet-sour flavor is ideal for desserts and preserves and their acidity levels lend itself beautifully to sauces for fish and meat.

Red Gooseberry

  • Produces a good yield crop of pink-red large sweet tasting berries.
  • Very cold hardy and good resistance to powdery mildew.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • June - July harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 2-9.
  • Plants are semi-thornless and grow 4feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

Green Gooseberry

  • Produce a high yield crop of large green fruit.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • June - July harvest.
  • Zone hardiness 3-9.
  • Plants grow 4feet tall and can spread 3 feet wide.

Jostaberry

Jostaberries are excellent for eating fresh and are a currant gooseberry hybrid. Until they turn nearly black and ripen they look like a gooseberry. The berry size is larger with a milder flavor then black currents.

  • Produces large black sweet tasting berries.
  • July harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Its vigorous growth must be controlled with annual pruning.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Follow planting directions on label.

Tayberry

Tayberries are blackberry-raspberry cross. Growth is vigorous and the plants need to be supported or tied to a fence.

  • Produces large purple red berries with a soft distinctive flavor.
  • July- September harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and 20 inches wide.
  • Zone hardiness 4-9.
  • Follow planting directions on label.

Boysenberry

A blackberry-raspberry-loganberry cross.

  • Produces very large dark purple fruit with a sweet and tart favor.
  • July- September harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Follow planting directions on label.

Loganberry

Loganberries are a blackberry-raspberry cross excellent for desserts and jams.

  • Produces an extremely heavy crop of long reddish purple berries with an intense tart flavor.
  • August - September harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Follow planting directions on label.

Hardy Fig

  • Produces a high yield of medium dark brown fruit that is deliciously sweet.
  • Allow figs to ripen before harvesting. Fruit does not continue to ripen after picking. Figs are ready to pick when they are slightly soft and starting to bend at the neck. If the skin cracks open, the fruit is fully ripe.
  • August - September harvest.
  • Good disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
  • Zone hardiness 5-9.
  • Follow planting directions on label.

Kiwi Issai

Kiwi are excellent for eating fresh, deserts, jams or jellies and freezing.

  • Produces 1” long green fruits with no fuzz that have a very sweet flavor.
  • A self-fertilizing variety, though planting a second plant nearby will increase yields. Bears fruit in the second year.
  • September-August harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 40 feet tall and 10 feet wide.
  • Zone hardiness 4-9.
  • Follow planting directions on label.

Blueberries

Buckerfield's sell some of the hardiest and most productive varieties on the market. Pick fresh for best flavor! Enjoy those muffins, jams and pies and pancakes. With just 80 calories per cup blueberries are packed with vitamin C. plant two varieties for better pollination.

Bluecrop Blueberry

  • Produces a heavy crop of large blue berries that are extra sweet.
  • July harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide.
  • Zone hardiness 4-9.

Chandler Blueberry

  • Produces a very heavy crop of the biggest blue berries with a full robust taste.
  • The world’s largest blueberry. Long ripening season that may last up to six weeks. Self-pollinating.
  • July-August harvest.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • Plants grow 6 feet tall and 7 feet wide.
  • Zone hardiness 4-9.

Duke Blueberry

  • Produces a very heavy crop of large blue savory sweet berries.
  • Blooms late and ripens early, which protects blooms from frost.

Northland Blueberry

  • Produces a heavy crop of medium blue very sweet berries.
  • Berries have high sugar content.

Pink Lemonade Blueberry

  • Produce a good crop of medium pink berries with a sweet mild flavor.
